The Magic Number is ....... 7.

Once it hits 7 degrees Celsius consistently here in Alberta it is time to replace your all season, or summer tires with winter tires.   It became law in Ontario a couple of years ago that all vehicles must run on winter tires in the winter.    This only makes sense because winter tires make your vehicle must safer on the winter roads.

Transport Canada states, “At temperatures below 7°C, standard tires begin to lose elasticity, resulting in reduced traction. Winter tires retain their elasticity to grip at much lower temperatures.

Why is this?   Well winter tires are made of a different rubber compound than your summer tires.   The rubber is softer, will conform to the road better and has deeper channels and treads to whisk the ice, snow and water away much more efficiently.

And don’t forget to check your tire pressure consistently and often.

For every five degree temperature drop, the tires lose one pound of air pressure -- so it's especially important to check your air pressure after the first frost. And a plus to properly inflated tires is optimum fuel efficiency.

And because when the cold hits everyone will want their tires on quickly, we recommend that you book an appointment now to have them installed around the end of October – that way you know you will riding on safe tires.

Take Care Out There...

If you driving to work early or into th sun, make sure your windshield wipers are working and all your lights are on. We all know how hard it is to see each other on the road.  It is getting dark early this time of year and we want everyone to be safe.

The Monster lurking Under the Hood

The timing belt is the belt that controls the camshafts in your engine and keeps the entire operation running smoothly.  A camshaft opens and loses the intake and exhaust valves in your engine, both letting air in to create combustion, and venting the exhaust that comes from those explosions. A timing belt must be properly calibrated in order to move in time with the motion of the pistons.

Regardless of what type of motor is present in your car, a failure in the timing belt will cause the engine to suddenly stop. This means that your car will suddenly stop running and you will not be able to get it started again.

Changing your belt early is definitely a lot safer for your engine, and a little money out of pocket can save you a lot of money and a new car in the long run.

Remember, even though you may get your oil changed every 5,000 km., and do all of your scheduled repair services, nothing can save you from a timing belt failure.

Make sure to get your timing belt replaced regularly and by a certified mechanic. It can mean the different between a good running car and useless piece of metal.

So the moral of our story?    Follow your manufacturer's recommendations and don't let the belt scare you!
